Ordered by Love: From Leo XIII to Leo XIV
My Upcoming Lecture Series with the Institute of Catholic Theology
One of the central confusions of modern Christian life is not a lack of sincerity, but a lack of order.
We are encouraged to “follow our hearts,” to equate freedom with self-expression, and to treat moral limits as arbitrary restrictions. Yet Scripture and the Church’s Tradition present a very different account: the moral life is about learning to love rightly. Not suppressing desire, but ordering it. Not choosing whatever we want, but wanting what is truly good.
This conviction lies at the heart of a new lecture series I will be teaching with the Institute of Catholic Theology called Ordered by Love: From Leo XIII to Leo XIV.
We will be looking at the seven themes of Catholic Social Teaching and the great writings of Pope Leo XIII, the Popes of the 20th Century, up through our current Holy Father Pope Leo XIV.
This is not a self-help course, and it is not a set of moral shortcuts. It is an attempt to think clearly about the structure of the Christian moral life and to recover a vision of discipleship that is coherent, demanding, and hopeful.
