Wonderful piece, Will. There is another tragedy you didn't mention but one I will wager has many more examples than my own parish bulletin. Our pastor jumped right on the media bandwagon and posted a viral meme in our Sunday bulletin: "I'm Catholic And I Stand With Pope Leo." (Everyone in the parish knows he "hates Trump.") Our bishop added his own prose to the political framing, by addressing the "Trump/Pope Feud" as if it were all simply politics. As you so sagely and authoritatively point out, everything is not political, and those who make it so (and those who fall into the snare) are only playing into the devil's hands.

Thanks for re-grounding your readers in the fact that our Faith transcends the world, not wallows in it.

I’m glad it was helpful. Your experiences are all too common. We can and should expect more from our clergymen.

I venture to guess the change will come with future generations of priests. Though I know many solid seminarians in my diocese that seem on the right path.

God willing, we can refocus ourselves on the perennial truths of the Faith!
